Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.

Stay cool...

Man, it was a hot one today! Thankfully, our little pocket of land we call home is being blessed with a summer evening thunderstorm, bringing with it a cool rain and a lovely breeze...the ultimate sleeping weather!

The distant thunder, with its low rumbling, sounds like a far away giant muttering to his children to "go to bed!" Flashes of lightening are my transient nightlight, all at once illuminating our bedroom with a flash of bright white...and then, just like that, back to complete darkness.

Farmer J will sit quietly and still in one of the rockers on the front porch, watching the storm pass by; I imagine, just as the original farmer would have done "way back when", some 100 years ago. J will watch the storm roll over the fields of corn and alfalfa, all the while thinking of the farm work that waits for him to do tomorrow...when the weather will be less pleasant. But that's tomorrow and right NOW the weather is perfect, with the lightening bugs flashing in the tens of thousands as far as the eye can see.

J will stay awake until the breeze has slowed to a halt, and the humid air has crept back in, like a low moving fog. Then he'll shut up the house and head to bed.

The forecast for tomorrow...more of the same.  We can take it, just as long as there are homemade blueberry pancakes fried up in a cast iron pan for breakfast. What a sweet last image for us to imagine before bed!

Our weekend...

was full of---

-making and eating a cherry pie

-doing dishes...I'm always doing dishes!

-putting the pigs in their new home surrounded by electric fencing

-wishing we were cats

-going to a birthday party

-painting furniture (Railings-my new favorite color by Farrow & Ball)

-Along with weeding, church, baseball, date night (Thanks Mima & Papa) and two trips to the store...

Ahhhhhh....we will all sleep well tonight!

A Sunday evening stroll...

We walked off our supper at a local county park...

The weather was perfect. The prairie was in full bloom.  And the children were wild!

Note to future self: when the boys ask if they can bring a football on a walk...the answer is always "no"!

We came home sans football. Maybe we will find it in the prairie this fall...

Winner winner chicken dinner

Pickle is pointing out where the chicken "breast" is... The boys don't participate in the actual process of "harvesting" the bird, and JJ isn't at all interested in helping afterwards. Pickle is more curious... They do both completely know where their food comes from and that there is no such thing as a chicken "nugget." Regardless...they'll order chicken nuggets whenever they can get the chance when we are in a restaurant! You win some...you lose some!

Farmer J plucks the feathers and gives Pickle an impromptu anatomy lesson.

A whole chicken cleaned up and ready for the deep freezer... And my favorite part...all the work and mess was cleaned up by the time I got home from the gym.

Homemade chicken stock simmering on the stove...

Even though I remain a vegetarian, I love, love, love that Farmer J can provide himself and his boys with healthy food that lived a fabulous free range life and had a quick and painless death.  Not too many men can, or are interested in being able to, raise-harvest-cook their own food! I'm a proud farmers wife!
