Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.

Two and through

Finally done baking pies!

One sweet potato with walnut and pecan crunch topping is done! In the fridge to chill until tomorrow; I'm off to bed!

Thanksgiving decor!

I'm thankful for my boys and their beautiful artwork that decorates our home!

One pie down... One to go!

Crazy hair, flour all over my tushy-- rocking this pre-Thanksgiving look! Thank goodness
for blurry photography from my son!  Love you, baby!

Action shot of Pickle smacking the leftover dough with the rolling pin! So boy!

My hens are letting me down...had to buy eggs... and only factory eggs available! Heart broken!

Missing my orange colored yolks already!

Ho-made French Silk pie for JJ! He has been asking for a "chocolate pie" for months. The joke is all for Farmer J.  For my first French Silk pie- the pudding turned out pretty tasty.  And the little scrambled egg bits give it a lovely texture* (*insert sarcasm).  I was surprised with how much my pie crust shrunk with par-baking.  Rookie mistake!

Pudding leftovers... For bed night snack!

Baker's barking dogs need a break!

Thank you to:

-My mom for my lovely apron (as shown above)
-My photographers: JJ and Pickle
-Julia Child for the best ever pie dough recipe
-Taste of Home for the French Silk pudding recipe
-Farmer J, JJ and Pickle for quality control and taste testing

"Cold and dark..."

I got home from a work and it was already "cold and dark."  Most people who know me well know that I hate to be cold but being cold in the dark is worse.  Cold, wet and dark---ugghh- I shudder at the thought.  With my headlamp and Farmer J's warm hat, I'm almost ready to battle the elements.

(This song is playing on my phone during chores;
Enrique Inglesias always reminds me of a favorite vacation to
Mexico when I was 18. Instant good mood.  Try it, if you need a
winter blues pick me up. )

The Halloween decorations found their way back into the barn... this is all Farmer J!

The goats and sheep were happy for their supper!

5:00 pm! Dark.  No moon light tonight.

Snow on the firewood and my boots.  I need to invest in some waterproof boots!

Next time, I'll remember mittens or gloves.  Very cold (and pink) hands post winter chores.  I have to say though-- the CND Shellac nail polish I'm wearing is "farm strong."

Gentle snow falls

Gently watching the snow fall as I sip green tea and work from home this morning...a lovely way to transition into a Monday!

Fireside Songs

http://youtu.be/TPeb1Czj55M

Here are the boys singing! First JJ (without and then with Farmer J playing the guitar).  JJ is singing O' Tannenbaum in German.  Too cute!

Then Pickle and I sing a song they've heard since infancy!

Here's a link to the original version I fell in love with before they were born!

Stay warm!

It's not as easy as turning up the thermostat...but a lot cheaper! Our upstairs will feel like the tropics by bedtime!

Good night

It's completely dark out.  Pitch black.  A cold spell will be at our door by morning's break, maybe bringing with it a dusting of snow.  But tonight, thanks to a warm fire, (lovingly started this afternoon by Farmer J to keep his family warm while he is away...and selfishly tended to by this ever cold woman) our upstairs bedrooms are as warm as a late July afternoon, minus the humidity.

The early, India ink colored sky, lures my children into an almost willingness to succumb to slumber.  Tonight, Pickle acknowledged he was ready for bed and JJ's (ever-present) energy surrendered to the darkness.  Children asleep by their bedtime... I'm thankful for the shorter days and longer nights.

Typically, the dark nights bring me into my bed at almost the same time as the children go into their beds.  But lately, I've been feeling the need for movement before rest.  Maybe it's my new job? A position that requires more of my time spent with my bottom on a chair or the seat of a car.  Maybe it's the caffeinated soda I've been drinking at lunch.

So with the children's gentle deep breathing softly flowing out of their bedroom and into the hallway, I return to my yoga mat.  Tonight, I'm not in the mood for sweating, shaking muscles or "core" strengthening but more of a gentle, slow and meditative class.  Farmer J would tell you that my yoga mood tonight was way out of the ordinary.  Typically, I go for the burn first and the nirvana last (or not at all.) I think I was just feeling tired and needed to surrender to what my body was craving.  One blessing of getting older, you start to actually listen to your body instead of ignoring what she is trying to tell you!

We moved to the farm for a slower, more simple life.  Yoga, as a form of physical exercise, has helped me stay in tune with what we were initially longing for... more peace and more quiet.  After years of living in this house, I prefer to work out on a tiny mat, in a tiny hallway, in a very old log home over exercising in a large, warehouse style room filled with flat screen TVs, florescent lights, bright colors and strangers.  I could do without the ladybugs dive bombing me while laying on my mat but the sound of the tiny beetles flinging their hard shells on the glass light above me has become part of my yoga soundtrack.

Below you will find a link to the yoga class I did tonight (and the "Do Yoga With Me" website that I adore!)  Even if you have never done yoga or haven't done yoga for a long time, you will appreciate this gentle and loving class.  No yoga mat necessary, just find a nice piece of carpet or area rug.

Time for me to go.  Farmer J just came home.  After he tends to the fire, he'll come upstairs to check on his "favorites" and he'll prefer to see my face on my pillow and not me hidden behind my extremely large laptop!

Good night and stay warm!

Quiet Time

Before bed, the boys and I have some quiet time. This is usually a time for yoga, quietly reading books, prayers and daydreaming.

Tonight, while I was doing yoga...

the boys were busy little bees making this fort... (and a lot more quiet than usual during our "quiet time")

They have promised me that they will be very quiet if they can sleep in the fort tonight. We will see…

I've noticed it's very hard for two little boys, especially brothers, to be quiet while trying to fall asleep. I think this feat will be even more difficult when they're sleeping in a super cool, brand new place that they constructed.

Wish them luck...

God speed little man, sweet dreams little man... Oh my love will fly to you each night on angel's wings!

Another Farmette(r) Family

Thank you to Sue, Pete, Tyler and Erica for their hospitality last night. It was so fun going on a hay ride, hitting the pumpkin piƱata, learning to hit a target with a compound bow and eating delicious apple crumble pie!

And it's lovely to be able to "talk" farmette life with others! And thanks for sharing this book with us (see below)! Can't wait to do some of these activities together!

My Man

"Go big or go home", Farmer J says!

JJ and Pickle Are Blessed...

with two amazing grandmothers.... Mimi and Mima.

Loving grandmothers think a like...

On the same day, the boys received Halloween cards from their Mima/Mimi.

They even both, without talking with each other, used the same Harry Potter stamps (guess what the boys were for Halloween)!
